2012 Hyundai Genesis 3.8 sedan: overachiever on a budget

The Hyundai Genesis 3.8 sedan is a humble overachiever. It is a large car that has it all, or most of it – spacious cabin, advanced engineering, technologies that enhance without frustration, 333-horsepower and stellar fuel economy. Fully loaded, its sticker price is at least $20,000 less than a comparably equipped European sedan, yet the Genesis defines luxury.

It compares with such cars as the Chrysler 300, Nissan Maxima and Toyota Avalon. And sizewise it meets or exceeds the Audi A6, BMW 5-Series, Lexus GS and Mercedes-Benz E-Class.

The rear-wheel-drive Genesis is sold in V-6 and two V-8 models. Starting prices range from $35,075 to $47,375 for the 429-hp, 5.0 R-Spec – all with an eight-speed Shiftronic automatic transmission with manual mode.

The test car, with both big factory option packages, was $43,910. This car has so much standard equipment that it seems silly to charge $35 for an iPod cable, but as equipped, the test car was full luxury.

Five years ago the exterior styling would have been radical. Today it is functional and that’s part of what gives this car such an accommodating demeanor. The sightlines are completely open and predictable, yet Hyundai includes front and rear parking sensors. The rearview camera, part of the Premium package ($4,800) gives a big view with guidance lines. And the snug, 36-foot turning circle is another appreciated facilitator in curling into and out of parking spaces.
